Truth

It’s never a good idea to promote being pathetic.

I have an obsession with t-shirts and other items with cheeky sayings on them. They make up the foundation of my wardrobe and contribute to my personal style, which I have deemed “rock n’ roll meets republican”, with a touch of pornstar thrown in on rare occasion just to mix it up a bit;)

My collection includes pieces like…

“Wake up. Kick ass. Repeat.” -my signature statement.

“The best thing to do in the morning is not talk to me.” -a pajama given to me by my husband who clearly knows how to manage our co-existence.

“Every good mom says the F-word” -a t-shirt my daughter gave me for Mother’s Day.

“Fresh out of fucks” -a coffee mug given to me by my sister/business partner.

“My Butt’s Been Wiped” -a tank I created and started selling after our demented president announced to the world, his had been wiped.

Along with a plethora of T’s donning 80’s rock bands and South Park characters, you will find me in some sort of saying nearly every day.

What you would never catch me in is some article of clothing declaring my ineptitude or declaring pathetic behavior. You know the shirts and coffee mugs printed with things like…

“I just can’t adult today” -aka I’m so childish and pathetic, I can’t even manage to act like a grown human.

“Mommy needs a drink.” -call me crazy but I’m not a fan of glorifying day drinking for stay-at-home moms.

Or my all time favorite:
“I’m vaccinated. You’re welcome.” -saw this one on a young woman, pushing the scales at about 350 lbs. “I’ll take care of my own health and maybe you should take care of yours, thanks.” 🙄

When I see people wearing this sort of shit, my first reaction is to stay away. That person clearly doesn’t have the tiger by the tail. Would you look to me for inspiration, knowledge or advice if I wore a hat that said, “Adulting Every Day Seems Excessive?” I hope not.

I can tell you over my many, many years of coaching, people who showed up in the gym announcing their shortcomings never found lasting success in achieving their goals. May seem like a strange correlation but it’s not. Hard truth.

I hate these shirts! If you own one, it’s not a personal attack on you. This whole thing has a point, please hear me out.

The message you tell yourself matters. The words with which you fill your mind matter and the clothes in which you present yourself to the world send a clear message. Starting your day by throwing on a shirt that announces your inability to function as an adult doesn’t set you up for success.

By 8:12am when I sat down to write this post I had cooked my family a protein rich breakfast, packed my daughter a healthy lunch, and dropped her at school by 6:30am, went to the gym and deadlifted, kicked and punched a bag about 100 times and rowed 3500 meters. I’m almost certain this shit wouldn’t have happened if I was wearing a shirt or hat declaring my inability to function as an adult.

I’m not attempting to give a fashion lesson here. I’m telling you what you wear shapes the way you feel. Think about the times you’ve felt the most empowered, confident and unstoppable. What were you wearing? Chances are it wasn’t sweats or stretchy pants.

When the lockdowns first occurred people were bragging it up that they were so excited to be taking meetings via zoom so they could wear pajamas or sweatpants and nobody would know. I think we can all see the detrimental effects on productivity that had! Customer service and productivity have taken a serious nose dive into the abyss and I have no doubt remote working has a lot to do with it.

If you want to crush your goals, be productive and dominate your life, you need to dress like it. The little details of how we manage ourselves aren’t so little.

What do you want your message to be?

I’d suggest starting with “Wake Up. Kick Ass. Repeat.”

LAST CALL! Converting to Substack

Hello my friends!
I'm finishing up the transition away from Locals onto Substack and wanted to be sure each of you have made the necessary adjustments to your accounts. For those of you who have remaining months left on your paid support here, I have comped you the balance over at Substack.
This will be the final week I post content here.
I will resume the live recordings over there, starting with our first call on Friday, March 3rd at 9am/12pm. Invitations to join the Zoom calls will go out on Substack. Mark your calendars!

Also, be sure to download the Substack App! I love the app and find it so helpful in organizing content I want to read later by keeping it on my dashboard.

See you on the other side!

Get a sneak peek at my book!

One of the biggest challenges in writing my book is not being able to share any of it along the way. Given my narcissistic need for constant approval and attention, not having any feedback is killing me. Even negative attention is better than no attention at all (which explains a lot of my behavior in life), so not only am I missing the praise but I also miss my haters.
I need to break out of this cave. Thanks to Chuck Palahniuk who writes Spoiler Alert on Substack, but you would know as the author of Fight Club, I got the idea to share some excerpts and things that won’t make the final edit. This will give us both what we need. I get some attention and you get some thought provoking words to make you think (and possibly laugh, cry or both.)
Today’s snippet is from the first draft of a chapter titled, Remove Your Kindergarten Name Tag. I am currently on my third revision and we can all be thankful for this. As I walk my readers through the dark hallways of my earliest years, and attempt ...

Worth a quick watch

Wanted to pass this short video along. We think of health in very limited ways. Faith, nature, love, communality, shared human experience…all prove to be just as necessary, if not more so, than going to the gym.
I’ve always viewed and taught health from this perspective. It is my belief the lack of these essential elements is as big an issue in our culture as poor diet and lack of movement.
The takeaway-we can do better🙏🏼
