The “nutrition industry” is full of shit.

I woke up this Saturday morning at 5:30am, the same time I do everyday. Headed down to my office nice and early to finish the work I didn’t get to this week, so I can spend the rest of the day with my family.

Since it’s Saturday and I’m not on a tight schedule, I allowed myself the luxury of taking a few minutes to scroll mindlessly through instagram. I’m thankful I did, as it gave me just the inspiration I needed to write today’s Truth.

This is the first post that popped up…

“How to lose belly fat with smoothies”

This was like a gift from the gods of bullshit. Someone is actually going so far as to claim this smoothie will help people lose belly fat, when the ingredients they list are the VERY THING that cause belly fat? You’ve got to be kidding.

Sadly, I’m not. This IG page also claims to “research very scientifically.” It appears they research about as well as they write.

Let me break down the nutrition of this so-called fat burning smoothie for you…

50 grams of carbohydrates (about what most regular, non-athlete people should consume in an entire day)

5 grams of protein (none of which are animal based nor complete proteins)

4 grams of fat (which I’m sure most people think is great because doesn’t fat make you fat)

The proper caption for this post would’ve been…

“How to store belly fat, feel hungry all the time, have a blood sugar crash, lack energy, experience mood swings and create a soft, pudgy body.”

The surest way to gain and store belly fat is to disrupt your blood sugar. Belly fat is also a major contributor to things like metabolic dysfunction, cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes, breast cancer, colon cancer, high blood pressure and premature death.

This is why I believe there is a special place in hell for those who spread this sort of catastrophic nonsense. It’s not just that it is a lie, it’s a lie that destroys people’s health.

The Information Age we’re living in is both a blessing and a curse. While you can pretty much get the equivalent to a bachelors degree from watching YouTube videos, you unfortunately are inundated with nonsense from people who claim to know a lot about things they really know nothing about.

It’s up to you to sort it out. When it comes to your nutrition and your health, I’d suggest you be highly selective about where you’re getting your advice.

LAST CALL! Converting to Substack

Get a sneak peek at my book!

One of the biggest challenges in writing my book is not being able to share any of it along the way. Given my narcissistic need for constant approval and attention, not having any feedback is killing me. Even negative attention is better than no attention at all (which explains a lot of my behavior in life), so not only am I missing the praise but I also miss my haters.
I need to break out of this cave. Thanks to Chuck Palahniuk who writes Spoiler Alert on Substack, but you would know as the author of Fight Club, I got the idea to share some excerpts and things that won’t make the final edit. This will give us both what we need. I get some attention and you get some thought provoking words to make you think (and possibly laugh, cry or both.)

Worth a quick watch

Wanted to pass this short video along. We think of health in very limited ways. Faith, nature, love, communality, shared human experience…all prove to be just as necessary, if not more so, than going to the gym.
I’ve always viewed and taught health from this perspective. It is my belief the lack of these essential elements is as big an issue in our culture as poor diet and lack of movement.
The takeaway-we can do better🙏🏼
